Michael Stelzner, founder of Social Media Examiner, opened #SMMW16 with his findings from the Social Media Marketing Industry Report.

Amazing Race – A Reversal

The Amazing Race reality show on CBS has seen a significant decline in viewers over the past few years. Recently, YouTube, Vine, and other well-known social media personalities have been sought out to help CBS boost ratings for the reality series. In the past, traditional media supplied the celebrities, now it’s the social media personalities who are being sought after in media like network television.

Traditional media now seeks after social celebrities. And, the fastest way to become an influencer is video.

The Social Media Marketing Industry Report states that 73% of marketers plan to increase the amount of video they incorporate into their strategy. Twenty-one percent of marketers say it’s the most important aspect of their planning and 58% want to improve their knowledge of YouTube in 2016.

2016 is the Year of Live Video

Fourteen percent of online marketers are using live video and 50% want to learn more. As we saw last year with the creation of live video platforms like Periscope, Meerkat, Blab, and others, we can expect to see more and more use of live video. And, now, with Facebook Live being available to anyone, it’s only going to become more and more mainstream for any business, or  personality, to become a regular video presence in our news feeds.

Speaking of Facebook . . .

Sixty-seven percent of marketers say that they will increase their Facebook presence this year, while 55% say Facebook is the most important social network. The social media giant had 50% more advertisers in the past year. Also, 86% of marketers use Facebook Ads (in comparison, 18% of marketers say they use Twitter ads).

Oh Yeah, and There’s Snapchat

In May 2015, Snapchat had 2 billion daily video views. In contrast, Snapchat had over 8 billion daily video views in February 2016! Sixteen percent of marketers plan on increasing activity on Snapchat and 28% want to learn more about the emerging network this year.

Are you on Snapchat? Do you use live video on Facebook, Periscope, Blab, or another network? I’d love to hear some of your ideas about what you’re focusing on in your digital marketing this year!
